It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! All across the country, airports are creating a holiday experience for their travelers. We’re talking Santa appearances, 40 ft. tall Christmas trees, and free ice rinks. We’ve found 5 of the most festive airports America has to offer. And in case lucky-you gets to travel abroad, we’ve included 3 of our favorites overseas too.
Domestic
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
O’Hare is the epitome of “deck the halls.” The airport drapes lavish wreaths, ribbons, and lights all along the corridors. Travelers love photographing the decorations. In fact, they take home the trophy for “Most Instagrammed Airport” during the holidays and understandably so.
Denver International Airport (DEN)
DEN’s holiday activities can’t be beat. The airport sets up a FREE ice rink open daily 9AM to 9PM through January 1st. It also displays the works of local artists who craft artisan, vintage toys in their Colorado Toys Exhibit. And if that wasn’t enough, enjoy some Christmas shopping and support local businesses at the first annual Holiday Market—open 11AM to 4PM, December 9th-11th.
Orlando International Airport (MCO)
Even with warm weather and dozens of palm trees, MCO brings Christmas cheer to Orlando. A 40 foot tree adorns the center of the plaza along with lights and red ribbons all around. The airport will host the Orlando Ballet, Orland Philharmonic Orchestra Ensembles, The Dickens Carolers, and more during December 10th-22nd.
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
LAX (one of the busiest airports) keeps the spirits up with their festive decorations. The airport is lined with ornate trees enclosed by white picket fences to really give that home-style Christmas feel. An annual favorite among travelers takes place in terminal 4 where a train runs around the ceiling’s perimeter.
Washington Dulles (IAD)
IAD is all about the Christmas spirit. They hire local carolers, classical music bands, school bands, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus! During your visit, you can admire the festive displays and even do some Christmas shopping.
International
Changi Airport- Singapore
Singapore goes above and beyond to deliver an around-the-world holiday experience. Throughout the airport you can find snow-covered versions of famous worldwide landmarks such as The Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Roman Colosseum. Most iconic, however, is their character themed playgrounds for children. The kids adore the SpongeBob and Disney installations.
Munich Airport- Germany
This is the 18th annual Christmas market at the Munich Airport. Hang out, feast, and shop in one of the 50 market stands hosted by local businesses. The market also features 300 real Christmas trees, a 50 ft. tall tree, and an ice rink right in the center of it all. It’s quite the winter wonderland in Germany.
Hong Kong International Airport- China
Ever heard of a Christmas tree made out of diamonds? Hong Kong sure has. The prized possession of HKG is their 52 ft. tall tree made of real Swarovski crystals. If you’ve ever visited a Swarovski store, you’ll know why that’s one expensive Christmas miracle.
If you need a little cheer while you travel during the holidays this year and happen to be flying through one of these airports, make sure you check out these spots!
